Frequently asked questions
Why isn't removing 20% the same as subtracting 20%?
Because the tax was added to the net price, not the gross. A 120 gross price at 20% VAT contains 20 of tax (120 ÷ 1.20 = 100 net) — subtracting 20% of 120 would wrongly give 96.
What's the difference between VAT and GST?
Mostly the name. Both are value-added taxes collected at each stage of the supply chain; "GST" is the term used in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, India and Singapore. The arithmetic is identical.
