Frequently asked questions
Is "25% off, then an extra 20% off" the same as 45% off?
No — stacked discounts multiply, they don't add. The extra 20% comes off the already-reduced price: 80 → 60 → 48, which is 40% off in total, not 45%. Retailers count on shoppers adding them.
How do I figure a discount in my head?
Work from 10%: shift the decimal point one place (10% of 80 is 8), then scale — 25% is 10% + 10% + half of 10%, so 8 + 8 + 4 = 20 off.
Does this handle tax?
Discounts apply before sales tax. Compute the sale price here, then add tax with the VAT / GST calculator if you need the till total.
