Ideal Weight Calculator

See what the four classic medical formulas say your ideal body weight is — and, more usefully, the range they span.

About the formulas

All four estimate weight from height above 5 feet (152 cm). Devine (1974) is the medical standard used for drug dosing; Robinson and Miller are 1983 refinements; Hamwi (1964) is the oldest and runs heaviest for men. None accounts for muscle mass or build — a broad or athletic person can be perfectly healthy above every one of them.

Frequently asked questions

Which formula should I trust?

None individually — the honest answer is the range. If the formulas span 71–77 kg, anywhere in (or near) that band is consistent with "ideal" by these definitions. BMI's healthy range (18.5–24.9) is an even wider, better-validated band — see our BMI calculator.

Why do the formulas need my sex?

They were derived separately for men and women because of average differences in frame and muscle mass at the same height.

These formulas are population averages, not medical advice.
