Frequently asked questions

Why do MPG and L/100km move in opposite directions?

MPG measures distance per fuel (higher is better) while L/100km measures fuel per distance (lower is better). They're reciprocals: L/100km = 235.21 ÷ US mpg.

Is UK MPG different from US MPG?

Yes — the imperial gallon (4.546 L) is 20% bigger than the US gallon (3.785 L), so the same car scores about 20% more MPG in UK figures. 40 mpg UK ≈ 33 mpg US.

Which countries use which unit?

The US uses US mpg, the UK quotes imperial mpg (though fuel is sold in liters), most of Europe uses L/100km, and Japan, India and much of Asia and Latin America use km/L.
