Frequently asked questions
Are g/cm³, g/mL and kg/L the same?
Yes — all three are numerically identical, since 1 cm³ = 1 mL and 1000 g/L = 1 kg/L. Water is 1 in all of them, which makes them the friendliest density units: a material's g/cm³ value tells you directly how many times denser than water it is.
Why does engineering use kg/m³?
It's the SI unit, so it plugs into physics formulas without conversion. Water is 1000 kg/m³ — just move the decimal three places from g/cm³.
Will it float?
Anything less dense than the fluid it sits in floats: pine (0.5 g/cm³) floats on water, steel (7.85) sinks — unless shaped to displace enough water, which is how ships work.
